No Hat Here
Stockholm, I still usually don’t wear a hat when I open for Brad. There is a thing in Nashville called a “Hat Act”. It implies that you have a microphone and some songs, so you wear a hat to look like a star. I am all but certain that Brad Paisley would tease me over the hat. We tease each other a lot. I do have two shows coming up, opening for Brad in Norway. Maybe I’ll wear it this time just to give him something to tease me about.

Joe Nichols joined me onstage at the festival in Seljord, Norway. We go way back, and he had no idea that I could sing. He couldn’t believe the story when I told him after we ran into each other at a festival. “Want to do a song together?” I asked. “How about some Merle,” he replied. Here we are doing Momma Tried!
Get a damn hat!
How Crazy is the hat? My friend Judy, a music agent, set me up with a headlining gig in Munich, Germany. “Wear your hat,” she ordered.
“I don’t have a hat” was my reply.
“Well, you need to wear one,” she insisted.
“Judy, I don’t have a hat,” I replied.
“You are headlining a show in Germany singing country music. Get a damn hat!”
So I got a damn hat. I have to admit, there’s something fun about putting it on. It’s almost like putting on another persona. Thanks, Judy!

The Brotherhood are Swedish. The Brotherhood was so amazing that I actually released the very first song we did together that day, Rusty Cage. We met that day and got on stage as Brad’s opening act that night!

This guy and I have done so much together. I poured my creativity and effort into countless sleepless nights working on his shows and videos. But I have been so proud of that work, and have done so many amazing things with Brad that it has all been worthwhile. Thanks for being an amazing friend, Brad.

Bill Shatner, my first hero. I am so grateful that Brad introduced us.

I did a bunch of Brad videos. She’s Everything stands out as it’s such a great song. It was also nice to work with Kim, even though her part was small. I loved how the whole arena fades away in the end, except for one girl. The implication being that although he sings this song to thousands at his show, he is really just singing it to one special girl. I get bummed that YouTube puts windows over the end of videos. It’s such a distraction.

American Saturday Night Set
Here we are working on the American Saturday Night video. Jimmy Dickens making a cameo. That whole video was green screen 2 video, presented in two dimensions in a 3d world. It was fun, but a LOT of shooting and compositing.

Brad and I working on his show; I have had the honor of being his creative director for well over a decade now. It’s fun to create with him.
Charity Event
Brad and I at the charity event that he and Kim do for Alzheimers. They are both so giving in case you hadn’t figured that out.

Of all of the actors I have directed, this little guy was one of the best. Tremendous work ethic, he showed up knowing his part and ready to work. It helps that he seems to love waterskiing.

Brad and I toasting the idea of him starting a charity. I had flown out to the West Coast to look at a similar charity out there. We checked out the charity that day, and had a meeting about it over a Guinness that night. “The Store” was started shortly after. I was honored that he asked me to help. The Store is an amazing grocery store. If you are in need and qualify, you can shop there for free. It provides good food with dignity for people who need a boost.
